Singer gets back on track

The 31-year-old won international fame after helping establish the crossover between classical and contemporary music and now live concerts are planned to satisfy her legions of fans around the globe.The new album will be launched at a Christmas Special in Teulada this December, with people travelling from the UK and Ireland to enjoy the show.

Izzy was forced to quit the recording business after suffering years of agony through the back problem spondylitis, an inflammation of the spine that needed correction through painful surgery. After 18 months of recuperation in Spain, she is keen to resurrect her own career while continuing to teach others and run a popular 'Rock Skool Academy' on the Marina Alta. And her new life on the Costa brought fresh adventures - she met "the best possible guy" and plans to marry soon.

TALENT
A talented singer and musician as a child, Izzy was a student at the famous Guildhall of Music and Drama when she was snapped up by Decca Records and released her debut Libera Me.In an exclusive interview with Round Town News, she said, "I was a bit of a rebel, I got my nose pierced and also got my music degree and teaching qualifications. At the end of the year, you had to give a 45 minute recital, sing in different languages and music from different periods. And then you have the opportunity to sing something modern.

"I decided, because I was in the throws of writing my own music for the CD, to perform some of my own stuff." Izzy said she aimed to "break convention" and make classical music more accessible to people. "My concerts start very pure. I will be wearing a ball gown and have my hair up in a bun, I will be very classical looking. At the end, I grab the mic, let my hair down and just go!"

Produced by Craig Leon - who has also worked with Pavorotti, Sting, The Ramones, Blondie and others - Libera Me topped the British Classical Chart in 1999. Izzy added, "Classic FM would not play it at the time, because it was too modern. Now it is very tame for the music they play."

Released in 2000, her second album Ascolta (Virgin Records) repeated the success in the UK and also reached number one in South East Asia. While 2002's New Dawn went one better and became a number one seller in the United States.
"Ascolta became the biggest selling album and got me travelling the world. Classic FM television came out, and my videos playing back then are still playing now!" said Izzy. "I'm still recognised through that, which is wonderful." And she found herself touring Japan, Korea and Taiwan and the USA to promote the albums. She also sang at a Twickenham rugby final, appeared with Aled Jones in her third appearance at the Albert Hall for the BBC's Songs of Praise, and supported Bryan Ferry on tour.

PAIN
"It was a real adventure, but throughout I was carrying a lot of pain with me in my back. The fear of this stopping me made me determined to carry on," said Izzy. "I had it drilled into me 'the show must go on' and so it did, with the help of anti-inflammatory drugs, which are not very good for you."

During a tour of Korea she found she could not walk. Medical tests followed and finally an operation - before going the slow and traumatic process of learning to walk again. "Everyone was rooting for me but, unfortunately, I couldn't carry on with the record company - I was not fit enough to travel the world and promote my work and they had to drop me," she said.
"My solution was to get some TLC - I don't believe in sitting around and moaning - and I decided to snap out of it." Izzy travelled to the Marina Alta to visit her grandmother and "collect my thoughts" and taking in new opportunities, decided to move here.
After recording two dance tracks and starting to sing live again at gigs in the region, she has found a new appetite for performing. She said she wants to build on her successful life in Spain. It will be a new chapter for Izzy - classical singer with a rock 'n' roll heart.
