Parents: Educate kids about dangers of huffing

 Huffing or inhaling volatile substances has become an increasingly popular trend among children and young teens in the United States and experts say the problem can happen anywhere, at anytime, with anyone. Recently, Hill had a huffing incident at the base Youth Center where three teenage boys, ages 13-14, took a can of Dust-Off from the Youth Center office and went into the bathroom and inhaled the fumes. The incident causes reason for concern for not just Hill, but for parents and kids everywhere. Huffing is the purposeful inhalation of chemical vapors to achieve an altered mental or physical state. Chemical vapors that are commonly used as inhalants can be found in more than 1,000 common household items. Paint thinner, gasoline, markers, nail polish, correction fluid, rubber cement, and aerosol cans are just a few items that are commonly abused.  Huffing inhalants is extremely dangerous, said Arthur Meyers, Headquarters U.S. Air Force.  It can lead to brain damage or death. Parents and anyone working with young people should be aware this practice is common and can happen. According to the 2000 National Household Survey on drug abuse, the number of new inhalant users rose approximately 158 percent from 1990 to 1999. The primary user group was composed of 12-17 year olds. The study said that by the time adolescents have reached eighth grade, one in five have tried inhalants at least once. Death can occur from huffing after just one use. The availability of these huffing agents often make huffing abuse very had to detect. Warning signs of huffing include: Drunk or disoriented appearance; paint or other stains on face, hands, or clothing; hidden empty spray paint or solvent containers and chemical-soaked rags or clothing; slurred speech; strong chemical odors on breath or clothing; nausea or loss of appetite; red or runny nose; and sores or rash around the nose or mouth. Experts say the best way to prevent huffing is through education and parent involvement and observation.  Parent involvement in their children s lives is the best way to deter kids from this or any dangerous behavior, said Janice Hollen, chief of Family Member Programs at Hill.  Parents should be open with their kids and talk about the dangers and consequences of huffing. Ms. Hollen also said the Youth Center is whole-heartedly committed to preventing any similar incidents in the future.  Our Youth Center staff is becoming more knowledgeable about this and other dangerous behaviors and will continue to be very involved with all of the youth and teens that come to our facility, Ms. Hollen said.  Again, open communication is the best deterrent.
